Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Resigns
U.S.Prime Press; Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and fled the country, as more people were killed in some of the worst violence since the birth of the South Asian nation more than five decades ago. Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced Hasina’s resignation in a televised address to the nation and said an interim government would be formed. Media reports said Hasina, 76, was flown in a military helicopter with her sister and was headed to India. CNN News 18 television channel reported she landed in Agartala, the capital of India’s northeastern state of Tripura, located across the eastern border of Bangladesh.
Protests and violence engulfed Bangladesh last month after student protests, which started with a demand for scrapping reservation quotas for government jobs, escalated into a campaign for the ouster of Hasina, who won a fourth straight term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition. The violent campaign led to the death of about 250 people and left thousands wounded.
Army chief Zaman said he had held “fruitful” talks with leaders of all major political parties he had “invited” and would soon meet President Mohammed Shahabuddin to discuss the way ahead. “The country is going through a revolutionary period,” said Zaman, 58, who took over as army chief only on June 23. “I promise you all, we will bring justice to all the murders and injustice. We request you to have faith in the army of the country. I take full responsibility and I assure you to not get disheartened,” he said. “I request you all to be a little patient, give us some time and together we will be able to solve all the problems,” Zaman said. “Please don’t go back to the path of violence and please return to non-violent and peaceful ways.”
Television visuals showed thousands of people pouring into the streets of the capital Dhaka in jubilation and shouting slogans. Thousands also stormed Hasina’s official residence ‘Ganabhaban’, shouting slogans, pumping fists and showing victory signs. Crowds thronged the drawing rooms of the residence and some people could be seen carrying away televisions, chairs and tables from what was one of the most protected buildings in the country. Some shouted, “She has fled the country, fled the country.” Visuals from Dhaka also showed how protesters climbed on top of a huge statue of independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father, and began dismembering it using an axe.
WEEKS OF PROTESTS, VIOLENCE
Student activists had called for a march to the capital Dhaka on Monday in defiance of a nationwide curfew to press Hasina to resign, after deadly clashes across the country on Sunday killed nearly 100 people. On Monday, at least six people were killed in clashes between police and protesters in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas on Monday, the Daily Star newspaper reported. The Reuters reporter could not immediately verify the report.
Sunday’s toll, which included at least 13 policemen, was the highest for a single day from any protests in Bangladesh’s recent history, eclipsing the 67 reported on July 19 when students hit the streets against the quotas. At least 150 people have been killed and thousands injured during violence touched off by student groups protesting quotas for government jobs last month.
The government declared the indefinite nationwide curfew starting at 6 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Sunday and also announced a three-day general holiday starting from Monday. There have been incidents of attacks, arson, and looting at government establishments, the ruling Awami League’s offices, police stations, and public representatives’ residences since Friday night, said local media. According to local media reports, violence broke out in 39 districts of the country. It said it had suspended all services indefinitely due to spiraling violence. The ready-made garment factories in the country, which supply apparels to some of the top brands across the globe, have also been shut indefinitely.
The country’s army had come into focus on the role it has been playing in countering the violence, with a group of retired military officers urging Hasina to pull back troops from the streets and take “political initiatives” to resolve the crisis. Critics of Hasina, however, and several human rights organizations, state that her government is excessively using violence against the protesters, allegations she has denied with her ministers. She told the nation earlier this week that “those who are carrying out violence are not students but terrorists who are out to destabilize the nation”.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra

The lone candidate put out by her party, Pheu Thai, for the position was Paetongtarn, who received resounding approval in the legislature. Not only is Paetongtarn a politician, but she is also a family heir. Even after being thrown out of office in 2006, her father, Thaksin, continued to play a significant role in Thai politics. She is now carrying on the legacy of her aunt, former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra. This makes Paetongtarn the second woman ever to hold this position in Thailand. After her win, Paetongtarn talked to the press and said she feels really honored to have been chosen. Even though she’s new to politics, she’s no stranger to being in the public eye—especially after she made headlines last year for giving birth just two weeks before the national elections.
Big Challenges Ahead
Taking on the role of prime minister isn’t going to be easy for Paetongtarn. Just this week, the previous prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, was forced out of office, which was a big blow to the Pheu Thai party. The party has had a tough time because it often clashes with Thailand’s conservative elites—a powerful group that includes top military officials, royalists, and big business leaders.
Paetongtarn’s family knows how tough Thai politics can be. Her aunt Yingluck was removed from office before a military coup in 2014, and her dad has been living abroad since 2006 to avoid corruption charges. Another family member, Somchai Wongsawat, was briefly prime minister in 2008 but didn’t last long before being ousted.
Currently, Paetongtarn has a lot of work ahead of her as the leader of an 11-party alliance. She will need to find a way to strengthen the economy of the nation, which isn’t in great health, and get people to support her party again. Pheu Thai had promised to roll out a digital wallet cash handout scheme, but it’s been delayed, leaving many people wondering what Paetongtarn’s economic plans will look like.

But the former members of Move Forward are already trying to start fresh under a new party name.
On top of that, the court also ruled that Srettha violated ethical rules by appointing a lawyer with a criminal record to his Cabinet.These court rulings are perceived by many as means of impeding genuine political change. As Paetongtarn Shinawatra steps into her new role, a lot of young people in Thailand might feel like having another Shinawatra in power means that real change is still out of reach.
